Gardening Jobs to Do in February in Scotland

February may still feel like a winter month, but it’s a key time to prepare your garden for the growing season ahead. Even with little work, you can make a huge difference for when spring arrives.

Here are some of the most important gardening jobs to tackle in February.

  1. Pruning and Cutting Back

Late winter is ideal for pruning many trees and shrubs while they are dormant. This ensures the growth continues and the plants aren’t damaged.

You should focus on removing dead, damaged or crossing branches. If the shrubs are overgrown, cut them back to make them tidy again. Don’t cut back spring flowering plants until they have bloomed. If the temperature permits, you can also trim roses.

  2. Clear Debris and Last Year’s Growth

You might have some garden clutter from the autumn, or maybe there has been a winter storm which has left behind debris, so clearing those away is key. Tidying the garden is important for improving airflow of soil and reducing disease risk to keep your plants healthy. This will also improve the appearance of your garden dramatically, making it a more welcoming space.

Many herbaceous perennials can be cut back now to ground level before the growing season begins. If you haven’t already done this, it’s highly recommended to do so to encourage fresh spring growth and prevent a messy appearance.

  3. Check Drainage Issues

February is when water logging becomes obvious. Addressing drainage issues early prevents long-term lawn and plant damage. If you have puddling areas, a moss-heavy lawn, or saturated borders, you could consider aeration, choosing plants which enjoy dampness, and proper drainage work - especially if the puddles stay for longer than 24 hours.

  4. Inspect Fences and Structures

Scottish winter weather can be harsh on fences, gates and raised beds. Check for loose panels, rot in wood, or storm damage before the spring winds pick up again and the newly growing plants get on the way of fixing the damage.

  5. Start Planning Spring Projects

Now is the perfect time to plan:

    • new borders

    • garden redesigns

    • landscaping upgrades

    • planting schemes

Spring schedules fill quickly, so early planning is always wise.
